Sheriff Walt Longmire is the inspiration for the TV series Longmire, which returned May 27 on A&E. Now, he’s back in print for his ninth case in the bestselling series from author Craig Johnson ( As the Crow Flies).

Set in Wyoming, A Serpent’s Tooth again features series favorites Deputy Victoria Moretti and Henry Standing Bear as homecoming festivities heat up in Absaroka County for the big game between the Durant Dogies and archrival Worland Warriors. When a Mormon “lost boy” wanders into town, followed by his bodyguard (claiming to be a 200-year-old Mormon elder), Longmire and company begin a search for the boy’s mother — a search that leads them to the compound of an armed and dangerous polygamist community with a vendetta. And the leader of the group happens to be the boy’s stepfather. “Shippers” should be happy, too, as Longmire and Vic’s romance heats up.

Meet the author, who lives in Ucross, Wyo. (population 25), at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Dallas Barnes & Noble, 7700 W. Northwest Hwy.; 214-739-1124.
