Arlington Martin scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning to overcome a 13-strikeout performance from Southlake Carroll ace Tyler Alexander, taking Game 1 of their Class 5A Region I final series 2-1 Thursday at QuikTrip Park.

Daniel Lingua (12-0) went the distance for Martin, whle Alexander (12-1) took the loss. Game 2 is back at Quik Trip Park, at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Martin (36-7) looked as if it might have something going in the top of the second inning, after Anthony Lyons doubled and Lingua walked with no outs. However, Alexander responded with three consecutive strikeouts.

The Dragons (34-5) struck in their half of the second. Chris Altimont tripled off the wall in right field. One batter later, Nic Motley singled him home for a 1-0 Carroll lead. Lingua then coaxed Conner Combs to ground into a double play to limit the damage.

Martin threatened in the top of the fifth. Landon Sackett led off with a single and courtesy runner Brock Schneider stole second before advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by Grant Jones. Tyler Kendrick then walked and stole second to give the Warriors runners on second and third. But again, Alexander worked out of the jam with a strikeout.

Martin finally broke through and took the lead in the sixth. Josh Watson led off with a double just fair down the third-base line. Lyons followed with a single, and an errant throw allowed Watson to reach home and tie the game at 1-1.

The Warriors went small ball for the go-ahead run. Lingua’s sacrifice bunt was followed by Drew Dowdy’s successful bunt. Then, Sackett’s bunt was fielded but the throw home sailed over catcher Hayden Zier’s head, ensuring Lyons was safe for the 2-1 Martin lead. Alexander used consecutive strikeouts to get out of the inning.

Carroll loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom half of the sixth, but Lingua got a flyout and end the threat.
