Dallas Cowboys rookie center Travis Frederick had his Duck Dynasty-style beard chopped off Thursday in front of fans and media members at 3 Stacks Smoke and Tap House in Frisco.

The first-round draft pick from Wisconsin reclined in a leather chair as Milad Ziyai, a barber from Floyd’s 99 Barbershop, trimmed Frederick’s bushy whiskers to benefit victims affected by the recent tornadoes in Oklahoma and Texas. Cowboys fans filled the back of a pickup truck with clothing, supplies, and non-perishable food items that will be donated to the victims.

“Today’s a great opportunity because in OTAs [organized team activities] we’re focusing on football all week and [now I’m] taking the afternoon to focus on the people who were affected by the tornadoes in Granbury and Moore, Okla.,” Frederick said. “I knew it [trimming his beard] was going to have to happen at some point. It’s starting to get a little bit warmer.”

Fellow offensive lineman Tyron Smith, the second-year left tackle from USC, came out to support his rookie teammate. Smith said he has been impressed with Frederick through the team’s second week of OTAs.

“He’s picking up things quickly,” Smith said. “I’m proud of him so far.”

Smith, along with rookie tight end Paul Freedman, an undrafted free-agent signee, sampled a variety of barbecue and looked on as Ziyai meticulously lopped off Frederick’s beard.

“I’m excited for Travis. He’s doing a really good thing,” Freedman said. “It’s a fast-growing beard. I think it will grow back fast.”

When the trim was complete, Frederick stood up and smiled. The shave, which erased almost a year’s worth of facial hair, took nearly 45 minutes to complete. Only closely-groomed growth remained in place of his previously eight-inch long beard.
