Doloris Lauer was enjoying the break between competitor performances when she heard a voice from above yelling at her to get out of the way.

A camera lens hood, about 12 inches in diameter, was falling from the third level of Bass Hall towards the orchestra level.

“It happened so fast,” Lauer said, whose son is a photographer shooting the competition for Cliburn Foundation. The incident happened shortly before the afternoon performances were set to begin.

Lauer said she had enough time to move over so the hood wouldn’t hit her. But she was glad that it didn’t happen during an evening performance when more people would have been sitting next to her.

“Yesterday there were people here (next to me) so it would have hit somebody,” Lauer said.
