Aledo Bearcats

2012: 10-2, lost in Class 4A Division I area round

Spring game: 6 p.m. Thursday

Coach Tim Buchanan said the team had a great spring and made a handful of discoveries. Aledo had a few pleasant surprises on the offensive line including Ruben Moxley, who will be a junior in 2013.

Cory Stitle, who has started on the offensive line the past two seasons, will move over and play D-line his senior year. Buchanan said he’s "been a big help to the defensive line," this spring.

Luke Bishop and Ryan Newsome are competing to be the next starting quarterback. Bishop is the younger brother of Matt Bishop, who started under center during Aledo’s three-peat from 2009-11. Newsome is a fast, talented athlete, who transferred from Hurst L.D. Bell.

“Luke’s a smaller version of Matt but they’re similar in that they both see the field well,” Buchanan said. “We’re working Newsome at both slot receiver and quarterback this spring. He makes Luke a lot better quarterback when he’s in the slot.”

Buchanan added that if the season started today both would get time behind center and that he plans on getting Newsome 15-20 touches a game one way or another.

Look for Daythan Davis, who is 6-foot-2, 225-pounds and runs a 4.7 second 40, to steal some carries next season as a bruising runner after playing linebacker last season.

Buchanan said the defense will be built around middle linebacker Jordan Mittie and that Matthew Hawkins had a good spring at linebacker.

The Bearcats will also bring back a talented secondary led by cornerback Jonny Carter.
