One of the unique aspects of The Cliburn is that the 30 competitors, who come from all over the world, stay with “host families” in Fort Worth. It’s a great way for them to get to know the area and it provides a quiet place to practice.

The bond between host family and Cliburn competitor is often one that goes on long after the playing is over, which is why we’ve asked one family to share their hosting experience. Tina and Ted Gorski, who are hosting 20-year-old Luca Buratto from Milan, Italy, obliged. Here are their first entry and photos:

May 22, 2013: Luca has arrived in the Fort, settled into the guest bedroom and is already a treasured member of the Gorski familia!

Everyone adores him, including Jack, our Standard Poodle, who lies adoringly by the piano while Luca fills the house with dreamy music.

Cooking is NOT one of my strengths so BRAVO for Central Market and their fresh pastas, Italian sausages and delicious breads. Fortunately, Luca seems to like all kinds of food including Texas cheeseburgers and Woodshed barbecue (however he was not too interested in the rattlesnake sausage ... don't blame him!).

Today all competitors gathered for the first time at Bass Hall and the Italian six donned cowboy hats and posed energetically in the vintage pink Cadillac supplied by one of the host families for a colorful "Welcome to Texas" photo op.

I have been involved in many facets of the Cliburn for many years, but this is my first time as a Mama!!
