The Texas Wild announced Wednesday that four-time Grand Slam champion Jim Courier will join the team for one match July 22 during the Mylan World TeamTennis season.Courier will take on John McEnroe in a singles match against the New York Sportimes at Randall’s Island in New York.“They are having a big charity deal up there to support the Johnny Mac Tennis Project,” Wild owner Jeff Launius said. “And Billie Jean King is going to be there to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the ‘Battle of the Sexes.’ We were asked if we wanted to participate, and I said ‘Absolutely.’ We’re honored, and who would say no to having Jim Courier on their team?”Courier and McEnroe played just three times during their professional career, with Courier winning twice, including a three-set victory in the round of 16 at the 1992 U.S. Open. The two are mainstays on the PowerShares Series for players 30 and over. Courier is the defending PowerShares Series champion.“Having Jim play for us that night will be special,” Launius said. “It should be a great night for the fans. Both Jim and John are still very competitive. They both have the desire and want to win every match they play.”It’s not known if the New York match will be broadcast locally, but Launius said the Irving-based Wild has signed on with KTXA/21 to televise two matches, including the home debut at Four Seasons Resort at Las Colinas on July 10 against the Washington Kastles, featuring Venus Williams. The second match has not been determined. Another match, featuring Bob and Mike Bryan, will be televised on a tape-delay basis by the Tennis Channel and Fox Sports.Season and individual tickets for the seven home matches during the July season are on sale at texaswildtennis.com or by calling 972-823-9453.
