Keller Central Chargers

2012: 6-5, lost in Class 5A Division I Region I bi-district

Spring game: 7 p.m. Friday

The Chargers return several performers from a solid, but young defensive unit a season ago. Coach Bart Helsley said the main concern in spring ball is on offense where Central has "a lot of holes to fill on the offensive line."

The Chargers also have an open competition at running back with Denis Popov, Justin Manuatu, who started at safety last season, and Anthony Gaut as leading contenders.

Jake McClurg returns at quarterback after passing for 877 yards, seven scores and rushing for over 900 yards and four touchdowns as a sophomore in 2012.

"I’m looking for offensive consistency," Helsey said. "The quarterback returns and that’s a good thing but overall we’re looking for improvement in the passing game and some basic things."
