Where the Super Bowl will celebrate a half-century of existence will be decided Tuesday by NFL owners.

They have two choices for the 50th anniversary game in 2016: the San Francisco Bay Area and South Florida.

The 49ers’ new stadium is being built and is scheduled to open for the 2014 season. With the NFL showing a penchant for bringing its championship game to new venues — Dallas and Indianapolis very recently, New Jersey next February — Santa Clara would appear to have a strong chance. Only once has the Bay Area staged a Super Bowl, in 1985 at Stanford Stadium.

The Miami area suffered a defeat in the state Legislature earlier this month that could severely damage its hopes of being chosen as the 2016 host. Or, for that matter, for South Florida to beat Houston for the 2017 game should it lose to San Francisco for the 50th edition. Both sites will be decided Tuesday.

Briefly

• Draft: The NFL and its players association are working toward a deal to move the 2014 draft to May, according to NFL.com.

• Seahawks: Running back Christine Michael, a second-round pick from Texas A&M, signed a four-year contract. Michael was the 62nd overall pick, Seattle’s first and the fifth running back drafted.

• Patriots: Tight end Rob Gronkowski underwent a fourth surgery on his left forearm that was initially broken in November 2012 then reinjured in January.

• Cardinals: Linebacker Daryl Washington, a former TCU standout, pleaded not guilty Monday to charges accusing him of assaulting his ex-girlfriend, who authorities have said is the mother of his baby daughter. Washington is charged with aggravated assault and criminal trespass. He was suspended for the first four games of the 2013 season for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

• Chargers: Rookie Manti Te’o is being kept off-limits to the media for now as an “organizational decision.” The former Notre Dame linebacker was part of a girlfriend hoax that drew national attention. Te’o attended a Hollywood party last week by Maxim magazine after it put his fake girlfriend on a world’s hottest women list.
