SPRINGTOWN Authorities closed down a marijuana growing operation in a Springtown home Sunday afternoon after firefighters responded to an accidental fire at the residence, the Parker County sheriff said Monday.

One man was arrested and Parker County Sheriff’s deputies seized 41 plants and additional cultivated pot.

Authorities noted that the home was apparently under construction to expand the marijuana operation.

Deputies identified the suspect as William Joseph McCue, 26, of Springtown.

The operation was located about 5 p.m. Sunday when firefighters responded to a fire call on Meadow View Road in Springtown.

Fire investigators believe the blaze started in an outdoor burn barrel which spread to a grass fire, moved to a storage facility and then to the home. Estimate of the damage was not available.

As firefighters battled the fire, authorities entered the home and discovered a marijuana growing operation that included an irrigation system, grow lights, timers and humidifiers. Deputies confiscated 24 large plants and 17 smaller ones in addition to other cultivated pot and drug paraphernalia.

At the home, McCue admitted to deputies that he had been tending to the operation.

The Parker County Fire Marshal is investigating the blaze and the case is being handled by the Weatherford-Parker County Speical Crimes Unit.

McCue was in the Parker County Jail in Weatherford facing a charge of possession of marijuana. His bail had not been set.

Additional charges are pending, authorities said.
