Former UT Arlington golfer Zack Fischer made his first cut on the PGA Tour after firing a bogey-free 65 in Friday’s second round of the HP Byron Nelson Championship

Fischer and another former UTA golfer, Bobby Massa, each shot 5 under in the Monday qualifier at the Lakes at Castle Hills in Lewisville to earn two of the four qualifying spots.

Fischer enters Saturday’s round at 2-under 138. Massa struggled to a 77 to miss the cut with a 152.

Fischer, who is from Texarkana, starts Saturday tied for 43rd place, nine shots behind leader Keegan Bradley.

Fischer and Massa are the second and third former UTA golfers — Zack Reeves was the first — to play in a PGA Tour event. Fischer, the first from UTA to make a tour cut, is competing in his third event after this year’s Valero Texas Open and last year’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Massa made his tour debut.

Tianlang misses cut

Guan Tianlang followed up his even-par first round of the Byron Nelson by firing a 7-over 77 in the second round. The 14-year-old’s day included a run of five straight bogeys on the front nine that effectively ended his stay in Las Colinas as he missed a cut for the first time on the PGA Tour.

This is the second event for the eighth-grade phenom from China since he made the cut last month at the Masters. He backed up his impressive play at Augusta National by making the cut at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

“Every tournament you can learn,” Guan said. “These two days I think I learned a lot from different angles.”

As for staying in America and playing in more tour events, Guan has some invitations but has not decided which tournaments will end up on his schedule. For the moment, the U.S. Open sectional qualifier on June 3 at Lakewood Country Club in Dallas is still on his schedule.

Daly sticks

After opening with a 71, John Daly entered his second round with some work to do in order to make the cut. Daly arrived clad in Dallas Cowboys colors and proceeded to shoot a 66 that included four birdies on the back nine to ensure he would be around for the weekend with a 137.

Daly will also play in the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial in Fort Worth next week.
