SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Matt Shortall hit a three-run home run in the first inning and UT Arlington hung on to beat Sacramento State 3-2 in Western Athletic Conference baseball on Friday.The Mavericks (29-25, 17-9) clinched at the least the No. 2 seed in next week’s conference tournament in Grand Prairie.Ryan Walker led off the game for UTA with a single. Derek Mitchell followed with a bunt single, and Shortall made it 3-0 with his third homer of the series.Greg McCall followed with a bunt single. The Mavericks would only have one hit the remainder of the game.But that was all they would need because of solid UTA pitching.Starting pitcher Zach Thompson (6-4) gave up six hits and two runs in six innings. Relief pitchers John Beck, Kennedy Winn and Daniel Milliman combined to give up two hits and no runs in three innings. Milliman got the final out for his second save.The Hornets scored their runs in the fourth inning.Nathan Lukes, Chris Lewis and Andrew Ayers each had singles, with Ayers knocking in a run.A wild pitch brought in another run. Rhys Hawkins walked, and Ayers tried to score on a ground ball, but he was forced out at home. Scott Burcham struck out to end the rally.The Mavericks will try for the sweep at 3 p.m. CT Saturday in the regular-season finale. UTA has a chance at finishing with the No. 1 seed depending on how first-place Cal State Bakersfield fares in a three-game series at San Jose State.
