COPPELL — A five-run Arlington Martin first inning seemed to be more than enough to take Game 1 of the Class 5A regional quarterfinal from Keller Fossil Ridge.Martin, however, would need every last one of its runs to ward off a seven-run rally in the final two innings and take the first game of the best-of-three series 9-8 at Cowboys Field.Three home runs in the final two innings pulled Fossil Ridge within one run in the bottom of the seventh. The comeback began with a three-run blast by Fossil Ridge left fielder Christian Hollie over the left-field fence. Second baseman Kenniel Rivera hit a solo shot that barely cleared the left-field fence. Two walks later, relief pitcher Turner Larkins threw a pitch to catcher Luis Rivas that barely hooked over the same wall as the previous two, bringing Fossil Ridge within one with no outs in the final frame.Larkins, however, found his control and sat down three of the next five batters, including two strikeouts to seal the victory.A strong wind blowing out to left aided hitters from both teams, resulting in a total of six home runs.Fossil Ridge enters Game 2 on the brink of elimination and having used four pitchers Thursday. Starter Hayden Hibler went just two-thirds of the first inning before getting the quick hook for Joel Perez, who carried the majority of the game on the mound for Fossil Ridge.Game 2 shifts from Coppell to Dallas Baptist University at 7:30 tonight. Game 3, if neccessary, will return to DBU on Saturday.
