Matt Shortall hit a pair of two-run home runs to lead UT Arlington to a 15-7 victory Thursday over Sacramento State.

The Mavericks (28-25, 16-9 WAC) strengthened their hold on second place in the Western Athletic Conference standings. Game 2 of the regular-season-ending series is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday. The final game is Saturday.

Shortall is the first Mavericks player to homer twice in a game this season. He also increased his team-leading RBI total to 51.

The Mavericks struck first, staking starter Brad Vachon to a 7-0 lead by batting round in the second against the Hornets (33-21, 14-11). UTA used home runs by Greg McCall and Shortall, two errors, two RBI doubles and a run-scoring single to jump on top early.

Shortall struck again in the sixth, blasting a two-run shot off the parking garage beyond the left-field fence.

Chase Weaver (4-1) worked 5 1/3 innings in relief of Vachon to pick up the win.

Brandon Lawrence matched his career high with four RBI, adding a two-run double in UTA’s five-run eighth, and John Michael Twichell added a two-run shot in the eighth.
