A driver was killed Tuesday afternoon when his car veered off U.S. 287 and crashed into a construction vehicle parked in the median, police reported.

The man’s name was not available Tuesday night because his family had not been notified, said Officer Thad Penkala, a Mansfield police spokesman.

The wreck happened about 3:30 p.m. as the four-door Hyundai was northbound in the inside lane of the highway near the Heritage Parkway overpass, Penkala said. The area is on the south side of Mansfield.

A four-door flatbed pickup was parked in the median as its crew worked on signs, Penkala said.

The car veered and hit the truck. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, Penkala said.

There were three or four people in the truck, but their injuries were minor, he said.

Investigators are continuing to try to find out why the car veered, Penkala said.
