In the national college cheerleading competition in Daytona, Fla. recently, the Weatherford College Cheer Squad gave everyone something to, well, cheer about.

The squad, a regular at the annual Cheer Daytona competition, posted its highest competition score ever, registering a 94.38 in the Junior College Division.

This placed WC third in the very close scoring. Navarro College won with a 97.45, followed by Trinity Valley at 95.95. Wallace State of Alabama was fourth with a 94.18.

It’s the ninth consecutive year in which WC has finished in the top four in whatever division it is competing, but never have they had a higher competitive score.

Navarro’s score placed them as grand champions with the highest score in all divisions, including universities.

Out of all the coed cheer teams/squads at the competition, Weatherford College's score would have placed them eleventh. There were approximately 120 coed squads/teams at the competition.

If the WC cheerleaders would have competed in Division I, they would have placed third behind Oklahoma State University (96.00) and Louisville (95.15), and in Division II they would have been a close second to Oklahoma City University’s 94.53.

WC would have easily topped Intermediate Co-Ed I, which was won by the University of Michigan with an 85.40.

“People were stopping what they were doing to watch us,” said WC cheer director Doug Jefferson. “Many of the other universities were cheering for us. We are very proud of the squad and its accomplishments, especially after losing several members between semesters.”

Only one of the 22 members of the 2012-13 cheer squad is leaving because of graduation, while three others may be transferring and five are undecided.

The head coach is Shawn Brogan and the choreographer is Tyson Thomas.

“We will be conducting fundraisers during the summer and all next year,” said Jefferson. “We would like to thank all sponsors and supporters of WC cheer, especially Weatherford College and the WC Basketball Booster Club.”
