University of Arkansas

Victoria Vela of Mansfield, a marketing major at the Sam M. Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas, was recognized for academic achievement at the college’s 2013 awards banquet. Vela was presented with the Outstanding Student in Marketing Award. Vela graduated in 2009 from Mansfield High School. The Walton College held its 20th annual awards banquet April 18 at the Fayetteville Town Center.

Southwestern Assemblies of God University

On May 3, Caitlyn Hudson, a Mansfield resident, graduated from the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) College of Arts and Professions with a bachelor's degree in digital media arts.

Mansfield resident Phillip W. Little graduated from the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) College of Arts and Professions with a bachelor's degree in sports mangagement.

Southwestern Assemblies of God University is a private, Christian university located 30 minutes south of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex in Waxahachie. The university was established in 1927, and now offers more than 60 associate, bachelor’s or master’s degrees on campus or online.

Texas A&M University

Derrick Christian Gastinger graduated from Texas A&M University at College Station in the commencement ceremony held at Reed Arena on May 10. R. Bowen Loftin, president of Texas A&M, presided for the graduates’ bachelor’s degree in Construction Science from A&M’s School of Architecture.

Derrick is the son of J. Gastinger of Blanket and Rick and Laura Hullum of Early. Proud grandparents are Allen and Beverly Gastinger of Early, Henry and Barbara Chism of Lake Whitney and Nancy Hicks of Lake Proctor. Derrick, his parents and grandparents were longtime residents of Mansfield. Derrick earned the 2009 Texas Scholars scholarship, graduating from Early High School in 2009 with honors and was recognized by the Texas High School Athletic Association for Academic All-State Football Team.

Throughout his course of studies at A&M, he participated in intramural sports and served as a coach for the City of Bryan Parks Department. Derrick led a team of six A&M Architecture students to compete against top universities at The Construction Association Education and Research Foundation 18th Annual ASC/TEXO Student Competition in Dallas, winning first in the Heavy Civil Division. Derrick partnered with Brazos Valley Affordable Housing Corporation to serve his Aggie community.

In 2011, Derrick interned for CollegeWorks Painting as the Branch Operator in Tarrant County. He has accepted an offer from Hoar Construction, LLC as a project engineer in Houston, starting in June.
