TROPHY CLUB — Jordan Hendrix knocked in three runs and Noelle Perritt added two RBIs, leading Birdville to an 8-4 victory over Trophy Club Byron Nelson and a sweep of the Class 4A regional quarterfinals on Saturday at Nelson High School.
Birdville (26-10) will face either Frenship or El Paso Hanks next week.
Hendrix went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Perritt knocked in two runs with singles late in the game.
Perritt, who hits seventh in the order, provided the insurance runs that Birdville needed after Nelson tried to stage a rally in the sixth inning.
“Sometimes being at the bottom of the order, pitchers are willing to throw more strikes, and I worked really hard this week on waiting for the right pitches,” Perritt said.
Susan Welborn, who tossed a three-hitter in the opener, did the same Saturday. She upped her record to 22-8 despite walking 10 on Saturday.
She gave up three runs in the first inning, then worked out of a jam in the sixth, surrendering just a run.
The Bobcats (28-10) stranded 16 runners for the series, eight on Saturday.
Nelson ace Ashley Dumoulin made it through seven innings Saturday, one day after being forced out of her start because of shoulder inflammation.
“She was definitely pitching different, but we didn’t have to change too much of the strategy we worked on this week,” Birdville’s Hendrix said.
Nelson coach Kathy Schoettle said her team struggled.
“We just didn’t execute the game plan, and that’s hard to fathom with this team,” Schoettle said. “We showed flashes of what we can do with opportunities, but clearly Ashley wasn’t 100 percent. But she battled for us and that’s all I can ask.”
