Justin Northwest pole vaulter Desiree Freier paid close attention Friday when Lakan Taylor of Saginaw Boswell set a state record at 13 feet, 8 inches to win the Class 4A UIL state title.

Freier and Taylor are teammates on the Elite Sportz Texas Pole Vaulters Club, so when Freier’s opportunity came Saturday during the 5A competition at Mike A. Myers Stadium, she made the most of it by clearing 13-9 on her second attempt.

“When I saw Lakan jumped 13-8 yesterday I had to come out, step up my game and jump 13-9 and I did,” Freier said. “I was keeping a good eye on her yesterday because she is one of my teammates. When I heard she broke it, I said I have to break it tomorrow.”

Not only was Freier competing with Taylor’s record jump but she had to contend with Waco Midway’s Annie Rhodes, who also cleared 13-6, but failed to match Freier’s record height.

“That was a goal, to set the record this year and after Lakan set it yesterday, she had something to go for,” Northwest coach Melanie Green said. “She knew she was going to have competition from the Waco Midway girl, too, but she brought it when she needed to.”

Freier cleared 13-6 on her third attempt, 13-9 on her second attempt and nearly cleared 14-00.05 on her final vault, but just skimmed the bar, causing it to fall.

“I was excited after I jumped 13-9, maybe I got a little over excited and that’s what kind of threw me off at 14,” Freier said. “I was also really exhausted. I was just wanting breath and water.”

Freier added had she cleared 14-00.05, she would of attempted to break the national record of 14-02.75.
