Hurst L.D. Bell Blue Raiders
2012: 7-4, lost in Class 5A Division I Region I bi-district
Spring game: May 24, 5:30 p.m., Pennington Field
The Blue Raiders return a lot of weapons on offense and could be poised for a breakout season in 2013.
Quarterback Colson Romano, who passed for over 2,000 yards and 25 touchdowns, returns with a year of experience under his belt. Running back Daniel Dorsett is also back after rushing for over 300 yards as a sophomore.
Bell is losing touchdown machine Aaron Dixon at receiver, but returns versatile Ryan Newsom, who gained 400 yards from scrimmage and scored four times last season.
The Raiders are losing a lot of leadership on the defensive side of the ball as stars such as defensive end Vili Leveni (Oklahoma State) and do-it-all safety Kamari Syrie (Iowa State) are moving on.
Coach Mark Smith wouldn’t bite on any position battles but said he loves the competition of spring ball.
“We keep a mindset in them that there are no returning starters when we start out in the spring,” Smith said. “It is a battle at every position and every player has to perform. This is where we see our team come together and develop out on the field.”
