Career options in school

Children need as many career options as possible in making their way through our school system. Each child is unique in aptitude, skills, backgrounds and aspirations. This is why I praise the Gold Seals program in the Fort Worth school district, which gives students an opportunity to learn and earn income even before graduation. This is particularly helpful for children in low-income households.

I would recommend adding to the career menu a military service option, especially for children who need a viable out from a troubled home situation. An enriched middle and high school ROTC-type program leading to military service can open the door to this escape. It would also provide an opportunity for service branches to invest in technology, training, and discipline in our schools.

Remember, choosing a pathway or making early plans does not close the door to college.
