For Mom, it’s not just another Sunday lunch

Only Mom opens doors for Mother’s Day.

Some of the best local restaurants — Grace, Lanny’s, Piola Italian — open only one Sunday each year, just for moms.

“It’s always a special day, and it’s a chance for us to do something different,” said Bobby Albanese of Piola, the Cultural District restaurant with an elaborate patio garden.

Piola will add a frittata, omelets and eggs Benedict to its usual menu of Italian pastas and entrees.

The Albanese family’s other restaurant, Red Door Bistro near Hulen Mall, also will open and serve a special Sunday brunch menu.

Piola, in a former home at 3700 Mattison Ave., is usually open weekdays for lunch and dinner and Saturdays for dinner; 817-989-0007,

Grace’s Dain Adam Jones will serve moms a choice of brunch dishes, steaks, Kobe pot roast or Texas buttermilk fried chicken with stone-ground Anson Mills grits; $28 and up, 777 Main St., Fort Worth, 817-877-3388,

Most restaurants already were booked by midweek, but try Reata’s brunch menu or one of the prime steakhouses. Del Frisco’s Double Eagle is offering moms a $25 gift card to come back later with any $50 purchase.

In Arlington, the elegant Cacharel has tables available for a special three-course brunch featuring a choice of six salads, six entrees and Cacharel’s beloved chocolate souffle or bananas Foster souffle; $49.75, 817-640-9981,

It’s also the first Mother’s Day for the beautiful new Blue Mesa Grill location in Lincoln Square, and in Northeast Tarrant County, the premier brunch remains the Gaylord Texan’s ($71, 817-778-1000). Less well-known but popular: golf-club brunches at Raven’s Grille in Euless ($19.95, 817-685-1843) or Cowboys Golf Club in Grapevine ($36.95, 817-722-2708).

Postwar pizza, out west

Yes, Campisi’s has brought Dallas’ original pizza to Fort Worth.

But we also still have Fort Worth’s original Italian restaurant: Margie’s Original Italian Kitchen.

In summer 1953, a family from Florence, Italy, took over a highway roadhouse west of town and introduced Fort Worth to pizza. (The first Italian Inn opened a month later.)

Sixty years and one ownership change later, the current Margie’s is no longer the Lozzis’ original. But it kept the same look and jukebox, and serves simple pizzas, generous pastas and salads.

Margie’s is offering a special weekend nights: two pasta platters and wine for $30. (A 16-ounce garlic-herb rib-eye is $23.95.)
