Colleyville Heritage Panthers

2012: Finished11-2, lost in Class 5A Division II Region I area round

Spring game: May 30, 6:30 p.m.

Priority No. 1 for the Panthers is to find a replacement for star quarterback Cody Thomas, who signed with Oklahoma to play football and baseball.

Coach Mike Fuller said it’s a three-horse race between Griffin Pickler, Trevor Anderson and Jacob Sisk.

“The leader at the position is Griffin Pickler. He was the backup this year, he’s a senior and has been waiting to step up and take that spot, but he has to earn it,” Fuller said. “We’re going to let them compete and see which guy we can do the best with.”

Heritage also lost its top three receivers from 2012 as Daniel Farrington and Nathan Crouch are both graduating and Kaelin DeBoskie moved back to Arizona.

The Panthers do return 6-foot, 185-pound running back DeMarco Corbin, who totaled over 500 yards and nine touchdowns from scrimmage as a sophomore in 2012. Corbin will miss spring ball while recovering from an injury but is expected to be 100 percent and to get a heavy workload come August.

Coach Fuller said there will be more fresh faces on defense than offense next season as the Panthers are losing their top four tacklers from a season ago.

“It’s not like they haven’t been playing football, they’ve been playing on JV, special teams or something,” Fuller said. “They’re hungry, they want to make their mark.”
