The Carroll boys golf team fought back after the first round of the state golf tournament to finish in third place.

The Lady Dragons finished 7th in the girls’ tournament, which were both played at the Morris Williams Golf Course in Austin last week.

Carroll’s contingent of Matt Gilchrest, Corbin Kasten, Hunter Glenn, Mason Greenberg and Colin Hamilton combined for a team total 582, behind state champion Austin Lake Travis (571) and Mansfield (576).

Both Gilchrest and Kasten are seniors, with the remaining bulk of the Dragons golf squad contributors comprised of sophomores and freshmen.

The Dragons’ total was two shots better than San Antonio Reagan and three ahead of Conroe The Woodlands.

Gilchrest shot a 74-68 to lead the Dragons in each of the days’ events. His 142 total was just 4 shots behind state medalist Andrew Paysse of Belton.

Carroll finished the first day on the course with a 300, putting them in a 15-shot hole behind second place Mansfield.

But they came back on Day 2 and shot a 282 and made up nine shots on Mansfield.

Greenberg shot a 77-69 for Carroll, while Kasten shot 75-79 and Hamilton a 74-74.

For the girls, Carroll was paced by Emily Grabarkewitz, who shot rounds of 78-75.

The team shot a two-day total 631 and also included Adriana Morrillo (83-78), Isabelle Youree (81-76), Amber Bosworth (79-81) and Leah Meza (83-82).

The girls state champion was Austin Lake Travis, with a total of 598. Austin Westlake was second, with a two-day total of 605.
