I appreciate MISD taxpayer Bill Tillotson’s concern about our local high school bands marching in Mansfield parades. By his calculations, it would cost approximately $2,500 for a band to participate in a parade. Most of the expense would be in transportation to and from the event. Is there any policy that will prohibit the band members from meeting and organizing at the parade origination point? This would eliminate renting buses. As for uniforms being in off-season storage, most Mansfield parades are held during the school year, is this considered off-season? If this is a problem, another option would be for the musicians to march in jeans and band t-shirts.

Our daughter marched in parades all during her junior high and senior high years as a band member. We lived in Longview at the time. It was a proud moment for parents and friends when our school band marched by. Bands from all of the local schools as well as schools from nearby towns participated.

As an MISD taxpayer, I would enjoy watching the high school bands march in parades. It would be a delight to see how our tax dollars are supporting the MISD band program and our talented young musicians.
