Dallas Baptist scored three runs in the third inning and went on to beat host UT Arlington 5-2 Sunday and win the Western Athletic Conference baseball series two games to one.

The Mavericks (25-23, 13-8 WAC) had 11 hits, but stranded 10 runners and didn’t get a hit with a runner in scoring position until pinch hitter Cody Dyvig’s RBI single in the ninth.

“We didn’t play very well, especially at the plate,” Mavericks coach Darin Thomas said. “We held them to five and escaped some jams.”

UTA scored its first run in the sixth inning.

Matt Shortall was hit by a pitch, Justin Copeland singled and Darien McLemore walked. John Michael Twichell knocked in a run with a groundout to second base. But a strikeout ended the threat.

The Mavericks had runners on second and third with one out in the second inning. But a pop-up and a groundout killed that threat.

UTA also stranded one runner in the first, third, fourth and eighth innings in dropping into second place in the WAC.

DBU is 25-23 and 11-10.

Twichell and McLemore each had two hits for UTA.

Chase Weaver gave up four hits, but no runs in 31/3 innings of relief.

UTA plays host to WAC foe Texas State in the last conference home series of the season beginning Friday.
