JOSHUA — Susan Welborn hit a three-run home run in the third inning, sending Birdville to a 3-1 victory over Joshua on Saturday in the third and deciding game of their Class 4A Region I area-round softball series.
The Hawks (32-8), who lost Game 1 but rallied to take the series, will face Trophy Club Nelson next week in the regional quarterfinals.
“My team, we fight, we really do,” Welborn said. “Everybody on the team was ready to go. I obviously didn’t have my best game, but everybody around me picked me up and it’s just a really cool thing to have going on.”
Welborn may not have had her best stuff on the mound by walking six batters, but she struck out eight and allowed just one hit to pick up her second win in as many days.
“She did a great job, she just kept banging away and banging away,” Birdville coach John Love said. “They are a very good hitting team, they’ll take advantage of your mistakes, and Susan just kept it away. I’m very proud of Susan today.”
Joshua (31-9) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Bailey Blair’s two-out bloop single that fell in shallow right, scoring Jackie Reynero, who took off from second on contact.
Welborn’s three-run blast in the third was her second home run in as many days and drove in McKenna Moore and Bailey Johnston, who both drew walks.
Birdville also defeated Joshua in the area round last season.
“They’re a good ballclub, they came out and got after us in Game 1 and then we set our mind on getting it back the next day and finishing it today,” Love said. “The kids did a really good job and the loss motivated us, but don’t sell Joshua short, that’s a good team, they are well coached.”
