KELLER — Seven innings wasn’t enough to account for Game 1 of the Class 5A bi-district baseball match between Keller and Arlington Martin on Friday.
Martin hung on to win 7-6 in eight innings, scoring the game-winning run on a passed ball with two outs in the top of the eighth inning. Landon Sackett scored the run. He reached on a double and advanced to third after consecutive walks.
Despite blowing the save in the bottom of the seventh, Martin relief pitcher Nathan Soroka picked up the win, facing just one more than the minimum in the bottom of the eighth.
Down two runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Keller’s Sione Teuhema kept his team alive by stroking a two-strike single up the middle, scoring runners from third and second to send the playoff game into extra innings.
The two-run rally was necessary after Martin plated two runs in the top of the seventh on a bases-loaded walk and a balk by starting pitcher Chandler Carter.
Anthony Lyons gave Martin its first lead of the game on a three-run home run in the top of the third.
Two Keller sacrifice flies in the bottom of the third tied the game at four.
The best-of-three series continues at 1 p.m. Saturday at Arlington Martin, with Game 3 to follow 30 minutes after Game 2 if necessary.
Both starting pitchers threw 100-plus pitches. Martin starter Daniel Lingua went six innings, striking out three. Keller’s Chandler Carter went seven innings, with three strikeouts.
