Spring football report: Birdville

A

Birdville Hawks

2012: 13-1, lost in Class 4A Division I Region I final

Spring game: none.

The Hawks set a new program standard in 2012 with their first undefeated regular season, most wins (13) and deepest playoff run, which ended against eventual Class 4A Division I state champ Denton Guyer.

Birdville is losing several key players to graduation, including quarterback Justin Martin and Under Armour All-American offensive tackle Joas Aguilar, who signed with Texas A&M.

The Hawks aren’t losing all of their weapons though. Running back Xavier Turner, who rushed for over 1,500 yards last season, returns for his senior season. Turner was at his best last season in the playoffs, where he gained 791 yards from scrimmage and 14 touchdowns in four games.

Coach Jim Skinner said they also expect to reload with a talented group coming up from the 2012 JV team.

“I feel good about the team, the kids are positive and a lot of them are coming off a 10-0 JV season,” Skinner said. “They got to practice four extra weeks during the postseason and we feel like we have the potential to have us a good football team.”
