Dallas Cowboys consider new running back Randle a starter, too

Owner Jerry Jones said the Dallas Cowboys won’t improve if they have to rely only on DeMarco Murray running the ball.

“To totally count on that would give you visions of 8-8, because the last two years, we’ve had games that we didn’t have Murray, and we didn’t run the ball as well,” Jones said.

Murray has led the Cowboys in rushing since they drafted him two years ago out of Oklahoma, but he has missed nine games.

The Cowboys drafted a running back in the fifth round Saturday, Joseph Randle of Oklahoma State, as insurance for a Murray injury.

Jones said he would consider Randle a starter.

“We really could envision him coming in and having that many plays a game,” Jones said. “One of the advantages, one of the reasons, we wanted him was because he really mirrors a lot of what Murray is, relative to a complete three-down back.”

Coach Jason Garrett said because Murray and Randle are similar, the Cowboys consider Lance Dunbar their change-of-pace back.

Wilber at DE

Jason Garrett said the Cowboys feel good about the defensive line, but they want to try Kyle Wilber at right defensive end.

Wilber was drafted as an outside linebacker in the fourth round last year but missed playing time because of injury.

“We are going to play him at the right defensive end spot and see how he fits into that role,” Garrett said.

QB thoughts

The Cowboys considered drafting a quarterback, with players such as Matt Barkley and Tyler Bray still available on the last day of the draft.

But Jason Garrett said teams have to be careful about stacking up a position.

“I think every team in the league wants to develop a quarterback, you want a guy coming along,” he said. “But we feel really good about the quarterbacks we have on our roster right now and what their roles are.”

The Cowboys have Romo, Kyle Orton and former Flower Mound and Tarleton State standout Nick Stephens as their quarterbacks.

Reportedly, they have agreed to terms with Iowa quarterback James Vandenburg and Akron quarterback Dalton Williams.

“If one of the those top guys had fallen further, we would have had another conversation about it,” Garrett said.

All starters

Executive vice president Stephen Jones said all seven of the Cowboys’ picks could turn out to be starters.

“That includes, of course, a nickel cornerback, in our minds, as a starter,” he said. “A second tight end is a starter. So we’re very pleased with that. That’s what we were trying to accomplish in this draft.

“I would say almost without fail, we accomplished the things we wanted to get done in this draft.”

Another question

Jason Garrett said the Cowboys have not decided who will call the plays.
