Joe Nieuwendyk’s tenure as general manager of the Dallas Stars is coming to an end, a source with the team said Saturday.

Nieuwendyk spent the past four seasons in the front office of the Stars, who suffered a 3-0 home loss to the Detroit Red Wings in their season finale Saturday and will miss the Stanley Cup playoffs for the fifth consecutive season.

Canadian network TSN and other outlets reported that Nieuwendyk will be replaced by Red Wings assistant general manager Jim Nill.

The Stars’ tumultuous ownership situation early in the first half of Nieuwendyk’s tenure didn’t help the former player, who was a member of Dallas’ Stanley Cup winning team in 1998-99.

Former owner Tom Hicks’ financial problems limited the team’s resources to make moves. Hicks put the team up for sale in 2010, the NHL then took over team operations, and the Stars filed for bankruptcy in 2011, before Vancouver businessman Tom Gaglardi bought the franchise.

Nieuwendyk took heat for trading forward James Neal to the Pittsburgh Penguins for defenseman Alex Goligoski, as well as his coaching hires of Marc Crawford and Glen Gulutzan after firing Dave Tippett when he took over as GM.

“All I can say is that Joe’s been tremendous for me.” Gulutzan said. “ I think he’s done a hell of a job as you can see with our farm team and the young guys we have here. Whatever happens with that — he’s a guy that hired me and a guy I’ve grown close to and he’s taught me a lot.”

Rookie defenseman Brenden Dillon agreed: “Joe’s done a great job here for us, for me especially, signing me as a free agent. Along the way he’s done wonders for me and he’s been awesome.”

Staff writer Mac Engel contributed to this report.
