UT Arlington built an eight-run cushion and then withstood a late surge by New Mexico State to win 9-5 Friday night in the opener of a three-game Western Athletic Conference series.

Catcher Greg McCall went 2 for 5 and drove in five runs to lead the offense for the Mavericks (23-19, 11-5 WAC), who got all 10 of their hits from the 1 through 5 hitters in the lineup.

Brad Vachon pitched into the eighth inning, giving up three runs on eight hits.

Shortstop Ryan Walker was 3 for 5 with three runs scores, designated hitter Matt Shortall was 2 for 5 and Brandon Lawrence 2 for 5.

But it was a three-run home run by cleanup hitter McCall in the top of the fourth inning that was the telling blow, part of a four-run inning that gave the Mavericks an 8-0 lead.

New Mexico State (23-20, 8-8 WAC), trailing 9-1, scored four runs in the eighth inning. Vachon gave up a walk and a double before departing for reliever Daniel Milliman.

Reliever Chase Weaver got the final two outs of the eighth and shut down the Aggies in the ninth.

“It was a tough first night against a good pitcher,” UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. “I thought our pitchers were good. All three guys did well. It’s an offensive park and to hold them to five is a good job. We played very well.”
