A horse was killed and a motorist was seriously injured in a three-vehicle wreck on a Burleson street Monday night when a car hit the animal on the roadway, Burleson police said Tuesday.

Burleson police had to close the street for about a half hour as they investigated the crash.

Patrol officers first responded to a report of horses on southwest Wilshire Boulevard in Burleson shortly before 9:30 p.m. Monday.

Seconds later, patrol officers received a call of a major accident in the 2200 block of SW Wilshire Boulevard.

"One horse was down on the roadway," said Burleson police Commander Cindy Aaron on Tuesday. "The owner of the horse showed up and told the officers that the other horses were in a nearby pasture."

According to Burleson police reports, a Nissan car was traveling on the road when it hit the horse.

"The horse was black and there's no lighting in that area," Aaron said. "The driver didn't see it in time."

The driver, who was not identified, was taken to an area hospital. The condition of the driver was not available.

Minutes later, a Chevrolet Tahoe that was traveling on the road swerved to miss the horse and hit a Mercedes, Burleson police said. The drivers were not injured in the minor crash.
