Northwest School District names teachers of the year

Jairia Diggs and Charles Cooper took home Teacher of the Year honors April 18 at the Northwest school district’s annual Inspire Celebration.

Diggs, a Gifted and Talented specialist at O.A. Peterson Elementary School, was named the district’s Elementary Teacher of the Year while Cooper, a government teacher at Northwest High School was named the Secondary Teacher of the Year. Last year, Cooper received a 2012 Outstanding Teaching of the Humanities Award presented by Humanities Texas.

Other honorees at the event include district retirees, 25- and 30-year service award recipients and Exemplar Educators from each campus. The Examplar Educators were selected from al l25 campuses based on their leadership, motivation and effectiveness in the classroom.

The district also recognized three Employee of the Year winners: Amy Davis, Instructional Support Employee of the Year, from Chisholm Trail Middle School; Thelma Graves, Administrative Support Employee of the Year, finance department; and James Monroe, Support Services Employee of the Year, maintenance department.

“These honorees are truly an inspiration to us all,” Superintendent Karen G. Rue said. “They serve tirelessly, share their talents daily and continue to engage students in the joy of learning and meeting new challenges.”

More than 400 people attended the Inspire Celebration, which was designed to recognize and celebrate dedicated educators and support staff for the important contributions they make to the students and community of the Northwest school district.
