Five things that went wrong for the Mavericks

Superstar forward Dirk Nowizki underwent right knee surgery on Oct. 19, missed the first 27 games and missed 29 games overall. The Mavs went 13-16 in Nowitzki’s absence.

The Mavs couldn’t win their share of close games. They were 3-8 in overtime games, and lost 20 games by six points or fewer.

Defense — or lack thereof — was a sore spot all season for the Mavs. That includes transition defense, too. The Mavs finished 27th out of the 30 teams in points allowed at 101.7 points per game.

If the Mavs knew how to rebound they probably would still be playing today. One more late rebound at Denver late in the season would have translated into a key victory. Overall, the Mavs were 16th in rebounding with 41.9 per game.

The Mavs played Russian roulette with their point guard position. Darren Collison, Derek Fisher, Rodrigue Beaubois, Dominique Jones and Mike James all took turns in the starting lineup.
