Texas’ Kenny Vaccaro won’t have long to wait on draft day, but will it be Cowboys calling?

Overview

It is a deep position. Texas’ Kenny Vaccaro is the likely top safety drafted, but he might be the only one drafted top-32. Only five safeties have been selected in the first round in the past seven drafts, so the position is not generally highly valued. Plus, the depth at safety in the second and third rounds might cause teams to wait until then to grab one. Then again, Jonathan Cyprien and Matt Elam might be too good to pass up in the first round for teams in need of a safety.

Cowboys’ needs

The need was created when the Cowboys released Gerald Sensabaugh, who started 60 games in his four seasons with the Cowboys. They do have faith that Barry Church can return from a torn Achilles’ tendon he suffered in Week 3 and that Matt Johnson can develop into the player they drafted in the fourth round last year. Johnson missed his entire rookie season with hamstring and back injuries. The Cowboys did sign Will Allen in free agency, but he has started only 33 games in six seasons and now is with his third team. Allen is a stopgap. It seems almost a certainty that the Cowboys will use one of their first three picks on a safety.

Top five

Kenny Vaccaro, FS, Texas, 6-0, 214, 4.59: He had 231 tackles, five interceptions, 24 defensed passes and four forced fumbles in his four-year career.

Jonathan Cyprien, SS, Florida International, 6-0, 217, 4.64: He started 45 games in his career and had four INTs last season.

Matt Elam, SS, Florida, 5-10, 208, 4.43: He had 26 starts, making 176 career tackles, 23.5 for loss, 13 pass breakups and six interceptions.

Eric Reid, FS, LSU, 6-1, 213, 4.49: He played in 39 games, with 29 starts, making 194 tackles, 4.5 for loss, and six interceptions.

Shamarko Thomas, SS, Syracuse, 5-9, 213, 4.37: His size is a concern, but he had 259 tackles in his career.

Sleeper

Rontez Miles, FS, California (Pa.), 6-0, 203, 4.59: He ranks fifth in school history with 257 tackles and left with 10 interceptions and four blocked kicks.

Top Texas ties

Cody Davis, Texas Tech, 6-2, 203, 4.41: He could be a seventh-rounder after making 362 career tackles.
