A man suspected of fatally shooting a pregnant woman and then leading police on a chase through Dallas was arrested after holing up in a home in North Dallas, police said.

The man also shot a Dallas police officer, who was taken to Medical City Dallas Hospital on Forest Lane, according to TV news reports. The reports said the officer was wearing a protective vest and was not believed to be seriously injured.

The victim's family told WFAA-Channel 8 that the woman and her unborn child both died at Baylor Medical Center. Dallas police identified her as Breshuana Jackson, 28.

The suspect holed up in a home on Galva Drive in the Hamilton Park neighborhood near Highways 635 and 75 for a couple of hours before being arrested, Dallas police said on the department's Facebook page.

The man had led police on a chase through the residential neighborhood. Bystanders scattered as the car flew past. It ground to an abrupt halt as it hit a curb, the bumper flying off. The driver took off on foot to a nearby house.

Police surrounded the house and told TV news helicopters to leave the scene.

Students at nearby Hamilton Park Pacesetter Magnet Elementary School were placed on lockdown, according to the reports.

The suspect is believed to have shot the pregnant woman about 10:15 a.m. at a home in the 12300 block of Hoblitzelle, a few blocks away from where he holed up on Galva Drive.

This report includes material from The Associated Press.
