A 42-year-old Saginaw man fatally shot himself late Saturday after arguing with other race fans in the infield campground at Texas Motor Speedway, according to police and the Tarrant County medical examiner.

Kirk Franklin was pronounced dead at 10:48 p.m. of a gunshot wound to the head, according to the medical examiner’s website. The cause of death was listed as suicide.

Franklin died near the end of the NASCAR Sprint Cup race, Fort Worth police spokeswoman Tracey Knight said.

Early reports indicated that alcohol could have been a factor, Knight said.

A TMS spokesman said the death occurred in the middle of the backstretch area in or around a pickup truck.

Saturday’s race, the first of two Sprint Cup events at TMS, was sponsored by the National Rifle Association.
