A man in custody escaped from a Denton County courtroom Wednesday morning and was recaptured a few hours later after he was shot in the arm by a deputy, the Sheriff's Department reported.

Alberto Guadalupe Contreras, 19, of Denton was in the courtroom for a hearing about 10 a.m.

"While the bailiff was in a holding cell with another prisoner, Contreras walked out of the courtroom," sheriff's spokeswoman Sandi Brackeen said in a news release.

About 2:45 p.m., deputies found Contreras in the 6600 block of Grissom Road near the northwest shore of Lake Lewisville. That's about 3 miles east of the Denton County Courts building on East McKinney Street.

"When they attempted to take him into custody, Contreras resisted arrest and shot[s] were fired," Brackeen said. "Contreras continued to resist, but was taken into custody."

The wound was not life-threatening, she said.

"No one else was injured," she said. "When released from the hospital, Contreras will be returned to Denton County Jail to face additional charges."

He was in court for a hearing on charges of driving while intoxicated, assault with bodily injury, criminal mischief and failure to appear.

The deputy who shot Contreras was placed on routine administrative leave while Texas Rangers investigate the escape and capture, Brackeen said. She said she was unaware of action on the bailiff.
