A man who walked away from custody Wednesday morning at a Denton County court was shot in the arm about five hours later by a deputy participating in the ensuing manhunt.

Alberto Guadalupe Contreras, 19, of Denton reportedly resisted arrest when he was shot at about 2:45 p.m. in the 6600 block of Grissom Road, sheriff's spokeswoman Sandi Brackeen said in the news release.

That location is about three miles east of the Denton County Courts Building on East McKinney Street in Denton where Contreras was first taken into custody Wednesday morning, Brackeen said.

She said Contreras was in Criminal Court No. 3 at about 10 a.m. to face charges of: driving while intoxicated, open container; assault, bodily injury; criminal mischief; and failure to appear.

But, "while the bailiff was in a holding cell with another prisoner, Contreras walked out of the courtroom," Brackeen said.

A search began for him, and when he wasn't found an arrest warrant for an escape charge was issued, Brackeen said.

Nearly five hours later, deputies found Contreras on Grissom Road, she said. The neighborhood is near the northwest shore of Lake Lewisville.

"When they attempted to take him into custody, Contreras resisted arrest and shot(s) were fired," Brackeen said in the news release. "Contreras continued to resist, but was taken into custody."

Brackeen described the wound as "a non-life-threatening gunshot injury to the arm."

"No one else was injured," she said. "When released from the hospital, Contreras will be returned to Denton County Jail to face additional charges."

Brackeen declined to identify the deputy who fired the shot, but did say the deputy was placed on routine administrative leave while Texas Rangers investigate.

She added that she was unaware of any actions regarding the bailiff in the court.
