ALEDO — Birdville advanced to its first regional boys soccer tournament in school history with a 3-0 victory over Stephenville on Tuesday at Bearcat Stadium.
The Hawks (18-4-6) will face El Paso Del Valle in the Class 4A Region I semifinals at noon Friday at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls.
These kids have fought, they built a program and they should be proud of themselves, Birdville coach Roger Garcia said. They are constantly fighting because they want to get better and they want to prove that Birdville is a force to be reckoned with.
Senior midfielder and captain Enrique Rangel led the way offensively with a hat trick. The first goal came in the 26th minute on a perfectly executed one-timer from Garrett Perkins. The Hawks stormed Stephenville (13-8-8) with a flurry of attacks over the next four minutes but Yellow Jackets keeper B.J. Kinsel made a pair of nice saves and another shot off a corner kick missed just wide to keep the score 1-0 at the half.
Rangels second goal came in the 66th minute off a free kick, which found the back of the net from 35 yards out. Birdville also had a goal wiped out due to a handball foul. His third score came on a penalty kick, which he converted easily, with 1:22 remaining.
While Rangel and Co. took care of the scoring, the Hawks shut out their third opponent in four playoff matches by a combined margin of 9-1. Birdville keeper John McGuffin led the way with five saves.
Our defense is our strength, Garcia said. Jacob Lightcap, John McGuffin, Kirby Seibel, Isaac Villalobos they are as good as there is anywhere. They have led us, they have picked us up when we are down and we will ride them to the end.
