The City of Weatherford Parks & Recreation Department will once again partner with Jerry’s Chevrolet to sponsor a spring fishing event for local youth.The Kid Fish Organization is scheduled to be on-site from 9 a.m. - noon Saturday at Holland Lake Park. Youngsters 16 and under are invited to participate in this free event.In preparation for the event, more than 300 pounds of catfish will be released into Holland Lake. Patrons are welcome to bring their own supplies, however, fishing poles and bait will be provided if needed. Also, Madison Cooley broke the 800-meter run record with a time of 2:18.75.Nelms at the HelmThe Weatherford Football Booster Club is inviting the Kangaroo community to meet new head coach Weldon Nelms on Monday at Kangaroo Stadium. Festivities will begin at 7 p.m.The event is free but the Booster Club will have food, drinks and spirit items for sale.“The goal of the 2013 coaches, players and parents is to show the program our community support,” Booster Club president Mike Guest said.Aside from a Meet-n-Greet with Nelms, information on becoming a member of the FBC will also be available. Nelms, who led the Class 3A Wimberley Texans to a pair of state championships in 2005 and 2011, was one of more than 110 applicants who appled for the vacancy. He has 29 years experience as a head coach, including 23 playoff appearances. His overall coaching record is 237-111-3 (.675) which also included stints at Glen Rose ISD (2000-02), Iowa Park ISD (1994-2000) and Rotan ISD (1987-90). Prior to becoming a head coach, Nelms worked at Lubbock ISD (1985-87) and Springlake-Earth ISD (1980-85).Most recently, Nelms was named a 2012 UIL Sponsor Excellence Award recipient – one of only 16 recognized annually.WC softball ranked 11th in the nationThe Weatherford College softball team continues to break new ground, and now they’re knocking on the door of the national Top 10. The Coyotes, in their second year of competition, are ranked 11th in the latest Division I Softball Poll released by the National Junior College Athletic Association.As of April 3, WC was 34-3 and enjoying an 11-game winning streak. They lead the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC) with a 17-1 league record.The Coyotes are the only NTJCAC program in the Top 20, and one of just three Texas schools currently ranked, along with Galveston (9th) and Howard (10th). In fact, Weatherford has already defeated Galveston this season and split a doubleheader with Howard.WC is out on an eight-game road swing before returning home April 20 to face North Central Texas at Stuart Field.
