While Baylor may view Tuesday’s midweek game like any other, UT Arlington has a bit of extra motivation to walk away with a win when they clash at 6:30 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark in Waco. The Mavericks’ season ended against the Bears in the NCAA Regional last year at the same ballpark after they had won the Southland Conference. UTA is coming off a tight series with Cal-State Bakersfield where every game was decided by one run. Matt Shortall delivered a walkoff double on Saturday, but the Mavericks lost the extra-inning rubber game on Sunday in heartbreaking fashion. With a runner on first, Brandon Lawrence ripped a shot to the gap that got stuck underneath the fence, forcing the umpire to rule it a ground-rule double and send the tying run back to third base. The Mavericks then grounded out to lose the game.“I’ve never seen that happen in the 27 years I’ve been in this game,” coach Darin Thomas said. “But we’re not going to sit around and feel sorry for ourselves.”The Bears aren’t the powerhouse they were a year ago when they were ranked No. 5 during the NCAA Regionals. Baylor has struggled to string wins together this season, but they’ve won five of their last six games to even their record at 16-16.Baylor is powered by Nathan Orf, a senior outfielder hitting .397 with 16 RBIs.The Mavericks are 30-80 all-time against the Bears.Game addedIn an effort to make up for the rained-out series with Oklahoma Christian a week ago, UTA has scheduled a game with Arlington Baptist a day before hosting San Jose State at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at QuikTrip Park.
