The Colleyville Heritage baseball team looked good through its first eight district games heading into Tuesday night's match up with top seeded Grapevine, and coach Alan McDougal said he has been impressed with his team's effort to this point. The Panthers will square off with Irving MacArthur on Friday night at CHHS, and McDougal said he is expecting a tough game.“They're a little bit down this year, but we usually get everybody's best effort, and I don't think this will be any different,” McDougal said. “I'm sure it will be a good game.”McDougal said he has been pretty pleased with the way his team is playing throughout the season, and as of late in particular.“District-wise, when you look at our 7-1 record, you can't really turn your nose up to that,” McDougal said. “To have only one blemish after the first round is pretty good.“If you had asked me how I would feel about 6-1 after the first round of district before the season started, I'd have said I'd take it.”With the 7-1 record starting the second half of district play, McDougal said he wants his players to focus on each challenge as it comes.“We're trying not to look too far ahead,” McDougal said. “I know it sounds cliché, but we're trying just to take one game at a time and focus on what we need to do each time we play.”McDougal said he has been especially happy with the play of Cody Thomas, who was hitting .448, with 10 home runs, eight doubles, 35 RBI and 10 stolen bases after the first eight district contests.“He has had a pretty good start,” McDougal said. “With 10 home runs, that is usually a great season for people, and he's got that at this point. People really have to watch what he's doing in order to figure out what they're going to do to beat us.”Thomas came through big in the team's 9-5 victory against Trinity on Friday night, as well.“Trinity has always been a tough place for us to go and play, for whatever reason,” McDougal said. “Cody had five hits in the game, which certainly helped. Jake Thompson did a decent job on the mound, and then we had a senior, Sam Kaskovich come in and threw the last 2 2/3 to hold on for that win. It's always tough to play that game, so we'll take the wins however we can get them against Trinity.Colleyville Heritage will play Irving MacArthur at 7 p.m. on April 12 at home.
