Extra security was needed for Josh Hamilton’s family in the stands for Friday’s home opener.

The Angels sought extra security due to abusive fans who heckled Hamilton’s wife, Katie, and their four daughters, and the Rangers complied by sending two extra guards.

“Just guys being ugly, inappropriate to my wife,” Hamilton said.

No fans were ejected and Hamilton said his family was “OK” after the game.

Hamilton tried to put a positive spin on the situation, calling it a “great lesson” for his children.

“They understand, they get it,” Hamilton said. “They understand they put their trust and faith in God, not man, period.”

Hamilton’s family watched Saturday’s game from a suite and will do so again Sunday. There were no suites available for Friday’s game.

Hamilton went on to say that he felt some fans crossed the line with a few of their chants directed at him during Friday’s game. Hamilton, who started in right field for the Angels, was showered with several chants of “Sherlock’s” and “crack head.”

Hamilton is known for his well-documented battle with alcohol and drug addiction, and had a public relapse at the Dallas-area bar Sherlock’s before spring training last year.

“Anytime somebody brings up somebody’s mistakes and throws it in their face, that’s always crossing the line,” Hamilton said. “Even in my most high time, if I’d go to the game or something, I just never had it in me to do that to somebody.

“So it always makes you wonder and think, ‘What are people thinking? Like, are they thinking? Are they not thinking? Do they have morals? Do they have values?’”
