ALEDO — Shootout experience paid off for Stephenville on Friday night as the Yellow Jackets topped Burleson Centennial, 1-0, in a shootout in Class 4A Region I boys soccer sectional playoff game at Aledo.
The Yellow Jackets (13-7-8) made their first three shootout attempts as David Frausto, Alex Sanchez and Ismael Torres each beat Centennial keeper Mason Stringer. Stephenville keeper BJ Kinsel watched shots by the Spartans BJ Rodrick and Walker Stewart sail wide and stopped Blake Haddocks shot for the win.
We played great, Stephenville coach Joe Carter said. We battled all the way through the game.
Stephenville will take on Birdville on Tuesday at Aledo in a quarterfinal playoff game with a berth in the Region I tournament at stake.
The Yellow Jackets defeated Mansfield Summit in a shootout in the opening round of the playoffs and overcame a 3-1 deficit last Friday to beat Fort Worth Trimble Tech, 4-3, in an area-round game.
Centennial coach Chance Rose had his Spartans (22-4-3) work on shootout attempts this week but it didnt work out for the senior-laden team.
I tried but you cant recreate the pressure of a shootout in practice, Rose said. We should have scored in regulation or overtime. It should have never come to a shootout.
Stephenville girls 1, Joshua 0: freshman Codi Beyer knocked a rebound into the net with 44 seconds to play to lift the Honey Bees (19-6-1) past the Owls at Bearcat Stadium.
Weve played them twice and lost both times to them, Stephenville coach Casey Weil said. Tonight we played them the same way we played them the last two times. We didnt change a thing. We had one girl step up and score a great goal.
The loss ends Joshuas most successful season. The Owls won the District 15-4A title and won their first playoffs games in the programs history.
