FORT WORTH -- Meador Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram has acquired land off Interstate 35W in far south Fort Worth where it plans to relocate next spring.

Kyle Hunter, who owns the auto dealership with his sister, Laura Hunter, said Chrysler is requiring some updates to dealer facilities which they won't be allowed to make in their leased space at 2351 SE Loop 820.

"We need to update. We're renters here and we could not come to good terms with the landlord," regarding the remodeling, Hunter said. "They're good people. They couldn't arrive at a decision and we're out of time. We can't wait any longer."

The dealership has been in west Fort Worth for nearly 25 years, on 14.5 acres with two large showrooms and a smaller used car center.

The owners last month bought 11.5 acres on the east side of Interstate 35W and just north of Risinger Road, where the former Golfworld Ultimate Practice Facility was located. The property was sold by Dong Kim of Arlington, according to deed records.

Hunter said they expect to begin construction on the new dealership, which will have one large building and a smaller used care facility, in June or July.

"We were very fortunate on the land," Hunter said. "We found this piece of land essentially on the first day of looking. It's a good location. It was our first choice."

The Hunters bought the dealership from their father, Hershell Hunter, in January 2012.

Hershell Hunter partnered with founder Moorman "Mo" Meador to buy a Chrysler-Plymouth dealership in 1982. It remained on University Drive until 1989 when it moved to its current location. The Oldsmobile dealership moved from West Seventh Street in 1994. Jeep was added in 1999.

Meador started in the auto business in Tulsa but moved to Fort Worth in 1954 to become a partner in Porter-Meador Pontiac. In 1957, he organized Meador Oldsmobile. Meador died in 2003.
