An elderly woman was found dead Tuesday night in her Irving home after firefighters extinguished a fire that caused heavy damage to her residence, an Irving fire official said Wednesday.

Firefighters discovered the woman, whom authorities did not identify, near the front of her home in the 3700 block of Hildalgo Street in Irving.

An autopsy will be performed, authorities said.

Firefighters responded to the blaze shortly after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"It took awhile to get it under control," said Irving Assistant Fire Chief Rusty Wilson on Wednesday. "We'd knock it down, and it would flare up. Part of it also caved in."

About 30 firefighters battled the fire using more than 12 pieces of equipment including engines and trucks.

Family members told firefighters that the woman had been living alone in her home, Wilson said Wednesday.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
