Patterson says Boykin still in TCU’s QB competition

According to TCU coach Gary Patterson, Trevone Boykin is still battling Casey Pachall for the right to start at quarterback.

But what if Pachall, as many assume, earns the starting nod? Where does that leave Boykin? It appears that Boykin most likely would be the clear backup, ahead of Tyler Matthews and Zach Allen.

None of this would be surprising news. But when asked whether Boykin would see any time at running back, Patterson was noncommittal on the subject, perhaps only not to tip his hand as to who will start under center.

“I don’t know about that,” Patterson said. “We’ll have six tailbacks in the fall. You might have two quarterbacks in the game. Right now, we’ll just see how it all works.”

Last week, Patterson said Boykin hasn’t worked out at running back this spring despite the Frogs practicing with just two scholarship running backs at the moment with Waymon James and Jordan Moore recovering from injuries.

If Pachall is the starter, could Boykin be used in some short-yardage situations next fall? He did some of that in the Frogs’ first four games before Pachall left the team last year. Boykin was practicing at running back the week Pachall left the team before switching back to quarterback two days before his first career start on Oct. 6 against Iowa State.

“We haven’t really talked about it yet,” Patterson said. “Right now, they’re both just running the offense. They’re both taking reps with the 1s. Casey is taking most of them. They both had like 29 snaps in the scrimmage. The younger quarterbacks had like 18 snaps.”

Saturday’s scrimmage, which was closed to the media, showed some progress since the team’s first scrimmage March 7, Patterson said.

“We were a lot more competitive than the first one,” he said. “Both older quarterbacks played well. The defense played well. We’ve progressed. We were better today; hopefully it’ll be better tomorrow.”

Patterson said he won’t name a starting quarterback until August, but he has not hesitated to separate the four into two categories.

“So it’s great competition between [Trevone] and Casey,” he said. “The younger ones are doing some good things, but they’re not in the category as the older two guys right now. Tyler is still just a redshirt freshman. He has high expectations, so he’s a bit frustrated. But we’re pleased with where his progress has been.”

Quotable

“He’s going to have to be a lot better than he was a year ago to be better because he’s going to be blocked more. Everybody thinks after your freshman year it becomes easy. Well, actually, spring ball the next year — I call it the sophomore jinx — it’s harder. You have to load up and get yourself ready to go.” — TCU coach Gary Patterson on sophomore defensive end and former Arlington Martin star Devonte Fields
