A 15-run explosion on Sunday gave the UT Arlington baseball team its first winning weekend since Feb. 23 heading into Tuesday’s game with Texas A&M at 6:35 p.m. at Blue Bell Park. While the Mavericks needed Sunday’s win to get their record back over .500, the Aggies are rolling having won seven of their last eight games.Matt Shortall kept his bat white-hot with a three-hit, five-RBI game that powered the Mavericks to their third 10-run game of the season. He’s now hitting .390 with 25 RBIs. While Shortall has carried the load this season, he’s finally getting help from an unlikely source.Brandon Lawrence, last year’s opening day center fielder who finished with a disappointing junior season, went 6 for 12 this weekend to raise his average to .345, earning his keep as a productive sixth hitter in the UTA lineup. The Mavericks will need both hitters to deliver against a stalwart Aggies pitching staff that has a 3.08 ERA and 178 strikeouts.UTA is in the midst of an eight-game road trip it wraps up this weekend with a series at Louisiana Tech. The Mavericks beat Texas A&M 3-2 in College Station last season.
